Musical housie, also called musical tambola, is the much-loved game of housie played with songs instead of numbers. It is one of the most popular games for seniors because it mixes memory, music and friendly competition, and it works just as well on a video call as in a community hall.
What is musical housie?
In regular housie (tambola), the host calls out numbers and players strike them off a ticket. In musical housie, every square on the ticket shows a song title, usually old Hindi film songs. The host plays a short clip of a song, and players who recognise it strike it off their ticket.
What you need
- A ticket for every player, with 15 song titles laid out in 3 rows
- A host with a playlist of all the songs on the tickets, shuffled
- A pen, or a way to mark songs on screen when playing online
- Small prizes or points for each pattern
How to play, step by step
- Every player gets a different ticket.
- The host plays 10 to 20 seconds of a song from the shuffled playlist.
- If that song is on your ticket, mark it.
- The host keeps a list of every song played, so claims can be checked.
- When you complete a winning pattern, call out (or unmute and say) the pattern name.
- The host checks your marked songs against the list. A correct claim wins; a wrong claim is usually called a “bogey” and that pattern stays open.
- The game ends when someone completes a Full House.
Winning patterns
- Early Five: the first player to mark any 5 songs
- Top Line, Middle Line, Bottom Line: all songs in that row
- Four Corners: the first and last song of the top and bottom rows
- Full House: every song on the ticket
Tips for a great game with seniors
- Choose songs from the decades your players grew up with, so everyone can join in.
- Use large, clear fonts on tickets and screens.
- Play a little longer clip if nobody recognises a song, and sing along together after each one.
- Keep each game to about 30 to 40 minutes so energy stays high.
- Give small prizes for every pattern, not only Full House, so more people win.
Why seniors love it
Musical housie brings back memories, gets people humming and laughing, and gives everyone a reason to meet regularly. Recognising songs and keeping track of a ticket is also gentle exercise for memory and attention.
